Family Physical Education Week Observance
Date:
September 24, 2026

Family Physical Education Week provides schools with an opportunity to strengthen partnerships with families while demonstrating how physical education supports student learning, health, and well-being.

Family Physical Education Week will be observed nationally October 5鈥9, 2026. Schools may choose to participate during the official week or at another time during the school year.

The 91精选 State Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CRSE) Framework recognizes families and communities as essential partners in education. Family Physical Education Week provides schools with an opportunity to engage families in the educational goals of physical education and to strengthen the connection between learning at school, at home, and in the community. This work reflects the vision of the NY Inspires initiative by creating authentic partnerships that support student belonging and success.

Physical education develops the knowledge, skills, and dispositions students need to lead healthy, physically active lives. Family Physical Education Week makes this learning visible by inviting families to experience the program alongside their children. As families participate, they gain a deeper understanding of how physical education helps students develop physical literacy, solve problems, work with others, set goals, and apply their learning beyond the classroom.

Schools are encouraged to design activities that reflect the strengths, cultures, and interests of their local communities. Participation may include inviting families to physical education classes, organizing a family activity event, providing take-home learning experiences, or connecting families with local opportunities for active recreation. Schools should adapt activities to meet local needs and encourage participation by all families.

Family Physical Education Week reinforces that physical education is an essential part of a student's educational experience. By strengthening partnerships with families, schools extend learning beyond the classroom and help students build the habits, confidence, and skills that support lifelong health and well-being.

Schools seeking ideas and resources to support Family Physical Education Week are encouraged to visit the Physical Education Standards and Instruction website. The Engaging School Communities Through Physical Activity section includes examples of school and community events, family engagement activities, and additional resources that may be adapted to meet local needs.
